I read somewhere that Microsoft says that Windows is better than Linux. Totally. But I think that Microsoft didn’t study well what Linux is.
They said that for material support, Windows is at the top. It depends where. Linux is always up-to-date on some brands. For example, HP maintains for Linux drivers for their printers and other devices, with a real interface to manage them. But HP is not alone : many brands today develops their drivers for Linux, to make their hardware suitable for the users that have turned into the open OS. If some others software are unsupported, it’s only because the developpers of theses brands don’t want to develop under Linux, but why, I don’t know. Another thing : Linux manages hardware faster : when I plug my iPod, it takes to Windows many time to regonize it and allow him to get power. Under Linux, it take one second max, even if the system is booting.
Then, they also said that Linux doesn’t support Windows Live Essentials. Very funny. But it may be not a mistake of Linux, but Microsoft’s one… And with software like Pidgin, Emesene, aMSN, … You can do the same. But maybe Microsoft don’t let Windows lovers know that
I read something on games, too. Linux allow playing. Some games are directly playable on Linux, and for the ones that are only build for Windows, Wine can be a wonderfull tool. I could run some Windows programs, and some of them plays better than in Windows.
But let’s talk about what Microsoft didn’t say.
First, visual effects. On Windows, Aero allow some effects… But not so many than Compiz Fusion does. Desktop Cube, Woobly Windows, ADD Helper, so many effects that would be cool under Windows.
Rapidity and ressources is also a bad point. On my computer, Linux is faster than Windows XP. Linux with Gnome, Compiz, … And run from an external HDD.
And the customisation… Windows is not very customisable : Window colors and Desktop, it’s not enough ! When on Linux, you can change windows styles, colors, controls styles, fonts, and even more… this, out-of-the-box, with so many themes aviable on the Internet…
So, maybe there are some points where Windows is better. But it doesn’t allow Microsoft to say that Windows is better. And remember. On each point, when Windows does something good, Linux can do it better.
